PEDIATRIC NEUROLOGY TRAINING PROGRAMS
Requirements
Applicants to Columbia University's Pediatric Neurology Residency Program must have completed two years of preliminary training through one of three options:
- two years of residency training in pediatrics in an Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) accredited program
- one postgraduate residency year in internal medicine plus one year of pediatric residency
- one year of pediatric residency and one year of basic neuroscience training
The first year of the Pediatric Neurology Residency Program is spent on the adult neurology service, and is very similar to the first year of the Adult Neurology Residency Program.
The subsequent two years are devoted to pediatric neurology, and include six months on the pediatric inpatient ward service, six months on the consultation service, and three months on the neuropathology service. The remaining months are for clinical electives or research.
In addition, the Department of Neurology offers a basic neuroscience pediatric neurology research track funded by a Neuroscience Academic Development Award from the NIH.
How to apply
Pediatric neurology residency training programs are now transitioning from the San Francisco Matching Program (SFMP) to the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP). This decision to transition to the NRMP is relatively new, and was made by the Executive Boards of the Child Neurology Society (CNS). The formal application process is currently in development and more information will be available soon.
In general, positions in the Columbia University Pediatric Neurology Residency Program are available three years in advance, although occasional earlier vacancies do occur.
After a preliminary review of your completed application, you will be notified regarding the need for an interview; interviews are by invitation only.
